Office Health Tips

Staying fit and healthy while working in an office environment can feel like an uphill struggle. We spend 40, 50 or even 60 hours a week sitting at a desk, which can play havoc with your figure. There are a number of ways that you can improve your fitness and general well being whilst working your 9 to 5 day.

You are what you eat

Filling yourself with junk food is bound to make you feel bloated, listless and will add pounds to your frame. Stay away from the biscuit tin, refined sugars and carbohydrates cause your blood sugar level to go sky high and then crash. This will leave you feeling tired and lethargic and craving more.

Bringing healthy food and snacks to work will help keep hunger pangs at bay. Some fresh fruit on your desk or some nuts and seeds in your drawer will mean that when the craving monster rears its ugly head you will have something nutritious to fill you up. Healthy food will also aid your concentration, we all know how we feel after a big, greasy lunch.

Eating small meals throughout the day is also an excellent way to balance your blood sugar levels. So let little and often be your new mantra. Protein will keep you full for longer, so try eating eggs for breakfast and some lean chicken or fish at lunch.

Staying fit

Hour upon hour sitting in one position is terrible for our health. Make sure to move around, take short breaks and stretch when you can. Going for a walk in your lunch break will help your circulation while also helping your concentration.

Use the stairs instead of the lift. Climbing stairs burns 472 calories per hour while also boosting the lungs and building up leg strength. Surprisingly enough walking down the stairs actually burns more calories than walking up stairs.

On your journey to work, try getting off a stop earlier and walking the rest of the way to the office. An extra ten minutes brisk walking a day will really add up over the week.

We all live busy lives but by being aware of what you are putting into your body and making some small changes to increase your activity levels throughout the day you will start to feel healthier. This in turn will also boost your mood and increase your productivity in the office.

Some companies arrange for gym membership discounts for the employees or you can join one of the many exercise and fitness programs or go all out and hire a personal trainer.
